Steaming at Woodbine

It’s July and it’s time for the 2-year-olds to surface. And the older horses start making their mark, race by race. Here are a few of my favourite things on a summer Sunday:

Summer Sunday. Yes, that’s her name. She now remains undefeated at Woodbine in seven starts, after taking the Royal North Stakes in her first try on turf.
Summer Sunday, a $95,000 yearling purchase two years ago, on her way to the track for the Royal North. Rafael Hernandez has ridden her to three consecutive wins. at Woodbine.
Summer Sunday turned back the rallies of some nice ship-ins from Churchill Downs, and Australian-bred Oleksandra.
Nobody could defeat Summer Sunday on this day.
Hernandez peeks back to see what traffic is behind him.
And then he celebrates a little.
Summer Sunday gets cooled off afterwards. She has now won seven of nine career starts.
Silent Poet, winning an allowance race over some salty competitors. A stakes winner last year, he returned to hold off all comers, including El Tormenta. Silent Poet is a son of Silent Name, just like Summer Sunday.
A moment with his friends, including jockey Gary Boulanger., who has ridden him in all but one of his starts.
Barilko, winning the first start of his career as a 2-year-old for trainer Catherine Day Phillips. He holds lots of promise.
Barilko and friend after his sparkling debut.
Remember this guy, Pleasecallmeback, wining the first start of his career, as a 2-year-old. He was a $200,000 yearling in Kentucky, but Ontario-bred.
Pleasecallmeback is from the stable of Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield. Pleasecallmeback is a half-brother to Woodbine Oaks champ Dixie Moon. And he cost $200,000 as a yearling.
Pleasecallmeback was the name owner Bill Werner gave this horse after trying to get hold of trainer Roger Attfield, not always successfully. It’s a bit of a needle.
