An eager Diabolic under Antonio Gallardo wins the My Dear Stakes over Curlin Candy and the grey Royal Engagement.
Diabolic with Gallardo, who has moved his tack to Woodbine this year. He’s 34, has topped Tampa Bay standings five times, Presque Isle several times.
Race favourite Lois Len finished fourth in the My Dear under Patrick Husbands.
Curlin Candy finished second in the My Dear for 2-year-old fillies. Trainer Mike De Paulo made this her first start, but she comes by her talent honestly. Her dam is Caren, a filly who was the 2016 Canadian Horse of the year.

Royal Engagement, with Kazushi Kimura aboard. She was a 16 to 1 shot for trainer Timothy Hamm. And finished third.
One Timer battled for the lead in the Victoria Stakes for 2-year-olds with Feelthebeat and then powered away to win by 3 3/4 lengths, easily. Feelthebeat finished sixth.
One Timer won his first start at Arlington Park in Chicago by 12 1/2 lengths. That made him the 3 to 5 favourite in the Victoria Stakes.
One Timer is ridden by long-time Chicago jock E.T. (Edward Thomas) Baird, who is 54 years old.
Baird’s father, Robert (R.L. as he was known) was a jockey, too, and retired at 62. Before that he served in World War II and won four Purple Hearts. E.T. Baird has come back from dire injuries and is a master at riding horses on the lead.
Concealed Curry, ridden by David Moran, trained by Barbara Minshall, finished third in the Victoria. He had won his only other start.
Twenty Four Mamba finished second in the Victoria, ridden by Rafael Hernandez for trainer Mark Casse. Twenty Four Mamba is a son of Casse’s former Kentucky Derby hopeful Classic Empire.
One Timer was anxious in the post parade and at the gate: he doesn’t like standing still too long.
One Timer is trained by perennial Illinois leading conditioner Larry Rivelli, who had an adventurous trip to Woodbine, hauling the horse across the border. Rivelli also brought us Jean Alexander, a fleet gray filly, who raced at Woodbine a few years ago.

Lady War Machine won the $100,000 Alywow Stakes on the turf.
Lady War Machine had won her previous start by 7 1/2 lengths, ridden by Patrick Husbands. Husbands also rode the 3-year-old filly’s mother, Native Bombshell, to win the Ontario Fashion Stakes at Woodbine.
Honey Pants had been the 9 to 5 favourite for the Alywow, but finished second for trainer Christophe Clemente. Kazushi Kimura riding.
La Libertee finished third for trainer Mark Casse with Emma-Jayne Wilson aboard.
Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll leads Lady War Machine to the winner’s circle.
